Frequently asked questions

Canada Study FAQ

Where can I find Canada education consultants in Chennai?

TRUEMATICS is a Canada education consultancy in Nungambakkam, Chennai (4/30A, Cathedral Garden Road, near BRS Hospital), with a branch in Andalpuram, Madurai. We have guided students since 2008 with college and university shortlisting, applications, PAL/TAL, study permit documents and pre-departure planning. Call or WhatsApp 97899 78816 to book free counselling.

Is Canada counselling at TRUEMATICS free?

Yes. TRUEMATICS does not charge a processing or service fee for Canada. Official fees, such as the study permit fee and the biometrics fee, are paid by you directly to the authority. Ask us for the current list for your intake.

Can students from Madurai and across Tamil Nadu apply through TRUEMATICS for Canada?

Yes. You can meet our counsellors at our Chennai head office or our Madurai branch in Andalpuram, or contact us by phone and WhatsApp. We support students from across Tamil Nadu who plan to study in Canada.

Should I choose a university or a college in Canada?

Universities mainly offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Colleges offer diplomas, advanced diplomas and graduate certificates, often with a practical or co-op focus. The choice affects your cost, your study permit and your post-graduation work permit eligibility, so we compare both for your profile.

What are the main intakes in Canada and when should I apply?

September is a major intake, and January and May or other starts are available for selected programmes. Intake availability depends on the institution and course. We recommend starting 8 to 12 months before your intake, because admission, PAL/TAL, funds and the study permit each take time.

What is a DLI?

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a Canadian school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. You must study at a DLI to get a study permit. Your institution and programme should also be checked for post-graduation work permit eligibility.

What is a PAL/TAL and do I need one?

A Provincial Attestation Letter or Territorial Attestation Letter is generally required for a study permit application, because Canada limits the number of new study permits. From 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL/TAL and the cap, and there are other exemptions. Most college, diploma and undergraduate applicants still need one, issued through their institution.

How much money must I show for a Canada study permit?

For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant studying outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for living expenses. This is in addition to your first-year tuition and your travel costs, and the amount is higher for accompanying family members. Quebec has its own requirement. Check the latest amount on the IRCC website.

Is a GIC required for a Canada study permit?

No, a GIC is one accepted way to show funds, not the only one. A Guaranteed Investment Certificate from a participating Canadian bank can be used where the amount meets the living-expense requirement. IRCC also accepts other documents, such as bank statements, an education loan letter and proof of tuition paid. Funds must be readily available, and officers check where they come from.

Is the Student Direct Stream (SDS) still available?

No. IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream in November 2024, so Indian students now apply under the regular study permit process with the usual financial and document requirements. TRUEMATICS prepares your funds and documents for the regular process.

Which documents do I need for a Canada study permit?

Usually your letter of acceptance from a DLI, a PAL/TAL where required, passport, proof of funds, academic documents, English-language test results and a study plan or explanation letter. Biometrics are also required. Requirements vary by applicant, so we prepare your file against the current IRCC checklist.

What English test do I need for Canada?

Most institutions ask for IELTS Academic, and many also accept other tests, such as PTE or Duolingo, depending on the course. Required scores vary by institution and programme. A language test is also needed later for the post-graduation work permit, so plan your scores with that in mind.

Can international students work while studying in Canada?

Eligible students can generally work up to 24 hours per week off campus during regular academic sessions, and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to study permit conditions and eligibility. Check the conditions on your own study permit before you start work.

Can I work after studying in Canada?

Eligible graduates may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Eligibility depends on the programme, the institution and other requirements, and all applicants must show English or French language skills. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates have no field-of-study requirement, while some diploma and certificate programmes do.

How long can a PGWP be?

The length depends on the programme and eligibility. An eligible master's programme of at least 8 months can qualify for a 3-year PGWP, subject to all other requirements. Other programmes have different rules, so check the length for your chosen course before you apply.

Can my spouse come with me to Canada?

Only in certain cases. Spouses of students in master's programmes of 16 months or longer, doctoral programmes and some professional programmes may be eligible for a spousal open work permit. Rules change, so check the current IRCC guidance for your course before you plan.

How much does it cost to study in Canada?

There is no single fee. Tuition varies by institution, programme and province, and colleges often cost less than universities. Besides tuition, plan for the CAD 23,448 living-expense requirement, travel, and the study permit and biometrics fees. Your acceptance letter shows your exact tuition.

Does TRUEMATICS help with Canada applications?

Yes. TRUEMATICS helps with course and institution shortlisting, application documents, submission, PAL/TAL, study permit preparation and pre-departure planning. We also offer IELTS, PTE and TOEFL coaching in Chennai.
