It was founded in 1953 as Centre China University of Technology and changed into HUST on May 26, 2000 as a merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, which is in the central of China with convenient transportation system.
HUST covers an area of over 1,153 acres with beautiful environment, elegant surroundings and over 72 % greenery coverage. It has been honored as the University in the Forest. HUST provides abundant service systems and library resources on campus for its staff and students.
At present, HUST offers eleven disciplines: engineering, medicine, management, science, philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history and agriculture, including 93 undergraduate programs, 304 graduate programs and 237 doctoral programs. Among them there are 7 national key first-level disciplines and 15 national key secondary disciplines.
HUST owns 11 innovation platforms including Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the base of digital manufacturing of equipment and technology, the base of gravitation research, and the base of transplantation medicine etc. Also, the University has five national key laboratories, one key national defense laboratory, six national engineering research centers, and one national engineering laboratory.
